Its source impedance is split into separate resistive parts for connecting opposite terminals of an office battery to the tip and ring leads of the loop. Currents in the separate resistive parts are sensed and summed for comparison against a threshold current to indicate whether or not a subscriber station on the loop is off hook. Threshold current magnitude is variable to accommodate loop start and ground start applications. When the off-hook state is detected, the origination scan circuit is disabled by switching open the resistive part connections, and loop current is thereafter provided by other suitable means. Automatic current limiting arrangements are included for converting the switching functions to high impedance circuit elements.

Methods for enabling enhanced call return in a communications network is disclosed. In some embodiments, the method includes receiving an incoming telephone call from a caller, wherein the incoming telephone call identifies a subscriber as a callee thereof; capturing caller-specific information for the caller, wherein the caller-specific information includes at least one of the name of the caller and the telephone number of the caller; and storing the caller-specific information into an intelligent peripheral (IP) within the network. Some embodiments of the methods include allowing the subscriber to access the caller-specific information stored in the IP. In some embodiments, the subscriber subscribes to an enhanced call return (ECR) feature as part of a service plan. Data-capable mobile devices query at least a public database to retrieve information about a set of parties engaged in communication. The results of the database query are employed to provide detailed caller identification and detail functionality to telephones or communication devices not utilizing traditional landlines or commercial caller identification service. Storage can be included to include address book function, query caching, and user preferences. An interface can be provided to facilitate display of rich caller identification information. The interface can further update displayed information without user input, or provide user selection control to request more information on a selected portion of displayed information. These features can be applied to determine the information about a party that is either receiving a communication or initiating a communication. 1.
