Efficient routing of a message over a data network. A first communication device sends a message to a telemetry gateway or short message arbitrator. The telemetry gateway or short message arbitrator determines the communication protocol of the first communication device and the communication protocol of a second communication device. The telemetry gateway or short message arbitrator converts the message to a data format compatible with the second communication device, wherein the message is converted to one of at least three different communication protocols. The telemetry gateway or short message arbitrator then forwards the message for receipt by the second communication device. The telemetry gateway or short message arbitrator can convert and forward the message without completing a store and forward process.

A portable telecommunication apparatus for wirelessly sending and receiving text messages , the apparatus comprising:a memory for storing at least one matching device identifier associated with the apparatus, the at least one matching device identifier corresponding to at least one matching device for which the apparatus is enabled to send and receive the text messages;a transceiver for sending and receiving the text messages over a wireless personal area network, the received text messages each having encoded therewith a unique sender identifier corresponding to an originating device;a processor for comparing the sender identifier from a received text message to the at least one matching device identifier and accepting the received text message when the sender identifier corresponds to the at least one matching device identifier; anda display module for displaying the accepted text message.2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is for discarding the received text message when the sender identifier does not correspond to the at least one matching device identifier.3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the memory has stored therein a single matching device identifier corresponding to a single matching device for which the apparatus is enabled to send and receive the text messages and further wherein the processor is for creating outgoing text messages each having encoded therewith a unique recipient identifier corresponding to the matching device and causing the transceiver to send the outgoing text messages to the matching device.4. The exemplary live voicemail functionality offers a user of a mobile station the ability to listen to a voicemail message, as the message is being recorded in a voicemail platform. The mobile communication network serving the user directs an incoming call intended for the mobile station to the voicemail platform, which records the audio for the incoming message. The network infrastructure also duplicates the audio and directs the duplicate audio to the mobile station for monitoring of the incoming message by the user, as the platform is recording the voicemail message. 1. An article of manufacture , comprising:at least one non-transitory machine readable medium; andprogramming embodied in the at least one medium,wherein execution of the programming by a processor of each of one or more elements of a mobile communication network configures the network to implement functions, including functions to:(a) receive an incoming call for a destination mobile station accessible for communication through the mobile communications network;(b) direct the call to a voicemail platform;(c) duplicate incoming audio of the call as sent to the voicemail platform for recording; and(d) direct the duplicated audio through the mobile communication network to the destination mobile station to enable audible output of the duplicated audio from the destination mobile station as the message is being recorded at the voicemail platform.2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the function to direct the call to the voicemail platform is responsive to a determination that the destination mobile station has not answered the call.3.
