In response to the rate anomaly, the station may transform into a software repeater for certain other neighboring stations. The repeater function allows for the relaying of packets sent by these neighboring stations to the access point and vice versa. The other neighboring stations, owing to their relative proximity to the repeater station, transmit data at a higher rate to the repeater station. Thus, the removal of the slower stations reduces clogging of the access point and increases the overall data rate within the wireless network. Further, a zero-overhead network coding protocol may be implemented in conjunction with the repeater function to increase capacity of the wireless network.

A method and a multi-mode mobile communication device operating said method are provided. The method comprises a multi-mode mobile communication device selecting a first data connection carried over a first radio access technology (RAT) based on a first requested QoS, and the multi-mode mobile communication device selecting a second data connection over a second RAT based on a second requested QoS. The multi-mode communication device comprises a first transceiver adapted to be connected to a server using the first RAT, a second transceiver adapted to be connected to the server using the second RAT, and a processor for carrying out the method. 1. A method comprising:selecting a first active data connection by a multi-mode mobile communication device while there is no data to be transmitted, said first active data connection carried over a first network utilizing a first radio access technology (RAT) based on a first criteria;receiving a notification of a data transmission destined for the multi-mode mobile communication device through the first data connection over the first RAT;selecting a second active data connection by the multi-mode mobile communication device while data is being transmitted, said second active data connection carried over a second network utilizing a second RAT based on a second criteria; andswitching from the first active data connection over the first RAT to the second active data connection over the second RAT.2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:upon receiving the notification, establishing a first data call on the first RAT and commencing the data transmission through the first active data connection over the first RAT;establishing a second data call on the second RAT and activating the second active data connection over the second RAT;switching the data transmission from the first active data connection over the first RAT to the second active data connection over the second RAT; andreceiving the data transmission ...

User equipment includes techniques that may improve operation by selectively controlling access to particular radio access technologies (RATs) for the user equipment while it is operating in certain modes, such as idle mode. Once the user equipment is in a connected mode, and operating with significant uplink and\or downlink traffic activity, inter-RAT procedures can provide the benefits of access to multiple RATs. This technique is useful in many different environments, such as an environment that is predominantly 2G or 3G with 4G hot spot coverage. This technique may also be useful for providing enhanced operations in 2G/3G capable dual SIM user equipment running in a camped mode or other modes. The technique is not limited to 2G/3G/4G or any other particular standards, but may apply to any standards in a sequence of evolving or incrementally improving standards.
