An A.C. track circuit without insulated joints, which may be made sufficiently short to detect the presence of each pair of rail vehicle wheels and may therefore be used to operate an axle counter, is defined by circuits 13 and 23 comprising, respectively, inductor 17 and condenser 15-and inductor 27 and condenser 25-which are adjusted to series resonance at the frequency of the applied signal. The signal is produced by a crystal-controlled transistor oscillator 43 (Fig. 3, not shown) operating at a frequency of e.g. 3.5 mc/s. and is applied across condenser 39 which, on one side, is connected as closely as possible to point 30 on one rail and, at the other side, is connected to the other rail at point 26 via a condenser 35 which forms a series tuned circuit with the inductance of the connecting lead 37. The condenser 39 and the inductance of the rails form a parallel circuit at the signal frequency which is tuned to resonance by the condenser. The resulting impedance between the rails at the signal frequency thus varies from a relatively high value at the mid-point of the circuit to a low value at its extremities. The presence of a vehicle axle within the circuit reduces the signal applied to a transistor receive element 51 (Fig. 4, not shown) from the series connected coils 21 and 31 which are coupled, respectively, to coils 17 and 27 of the end series tuned circuits, whereby a track relay 125 is released.
