Hollow articles are produced from organic thermoplastic materials by extruding a tube of such material vertically downwards, nipping the tube at a predetermined length between two mould sections which form the top of a four part hollow mould, severing the tube above the nip and moving it by means of the said mould sections, so that the mandrel is inserted into the inner end of the tube segment, closing the remaining mould sections 5 and 6 around the tube, thus nipping it around the mandrel, and applying fluid pressure, generally air, through the mandrel to expand the tube into contact with the mould. Preferably the inner mould sections 5 and 6 are cored so that a fluid, usually water, can pass through and cool the moulding before it is removed from the mould. Preferably the upper mould sections move vertically downwards after nipping the tube so that the tube is in a relatively taut condition when it is severed by either a double edge or a rotary tyre knife. The apparatus of this invention is suited for large scale production by employing a number of moulding units with one extrusion die and either moving the moulds laterally immediately after the lower mould sections are closed or mounting the said mould units on a turn table.
