In a cold-cathode trigger tube as described in Specification 761,882 the trigger electrode 7 is spaced at such a distance (about 0À3 mm.) from the plate cathode 1 that the auxiliary discharge cannot take place over the shortest path between these electrodes but follows paths on either side of this shortest path and is consequently not shielded from the rod anode 5 by the trigger electrode 7. The cathode plate 1 may be curved, e.g. part cylindrical and may be of molybdenum or tantalum with the operative surface cleansed by sputtering. Alternatively the cathode may be of nickel coated on its operative surface with a mixture of barium, strontium and calcium oxides activated during manufacture of the tube by the method described in the above Specification. The trigger electrode 7 may be a narrow strip and may be mounted parallel to the anode 5. The distance of the trigger electrode 7 from the edges of the cathode 1 is at least three times the shortest distance between these electrodes to prevent a discharge occuring to the rear face of the cathode. A length of cored getter wire 13 forming part of a closed conducting loop 14 is attached to the top of the anode 5. The gas filling is a mixture of 75 per cent neon and 25 per cent argon at a pressure of 40 mm. of mercury.
