In a shaft kiln discharge mechanism comprising a flat rectangular table 14 within a collecting chamber at the foot of column 10 and a hollow drag bar 15 guided by a track 17 at each end and fastened at each end to hollow push-rods 16 which are connected by couplings 21 to hydraulic piston-rods 22 to provide reciprocating motion of the drag bar, cooling water enters one push-rod 16 outside the collecting chamber and flows through said push-rod, a flexible hose 18 connecting the push-rod to the drag bar, the drag bar, a second flexible hose into the opposite push-rod and exits from that push-rod outside the collecting chamber. Curved bottom plates form an inwardly converging skirt 25 which defines the collecting chamber. Packing glands 19 provide a seal for the push-rods passing through the skirt of the collection chamber.
