[Also in Group XVI] In a machine for collating sheets to form booklets (see Group XVI), unprinted sheets, fed from rollers 230 to a receiving bin 29, are detected by a photo-electric device 320 and diverted into a shoot 344. The device 320 is suspended from a bar 321 and divided into two compartments 324 and 325 containing a light bulb 330 a a photo-electric cell 331 respectively. The bottom of the case 330 is provided with a slot 329 heading from the case 320 is an electric cable 332 (Fig. 32) connected to a source of power through a switch 333 operated by a cam 336 on a shaft 108. A second cam-operated switch 337 is provided which when closed energizes a trip gate relay controlling a solenoid to open trip gate 295. In operation, as a sheet passes under the case 320 the cam 336 closes switch 332 to energize the photo-electric cell 331 and light source 330. The circuit is such that the intensity of light reflected from a blank sheet establishes the quiescent condition of the circuit. If, however, the sheet has printed matter thereon the quiescent condition is upset. Further rotation of the cam 336 closes the switch 337 to energize the trip gate relay which, if the quiescent condition of the photo-electric circuit is maintained by a blank sheet, operates the trip gate 295 to divert the sheet into shoot 344. If there is printed matter on the sheet the photo-electric circuit prevents the trip gate relay from operating the trip gate 295. Above the roller 235 a second photo-electric cell 350 is mounted which co-operates with a bulb 355 and serves to count the products delivered to a rotatable bar 29, and to control the-drive mechanism.
