H and R 5 represents CH 3 R 6 and R 7 represent a group other than CH 3 CO, specifically the new compound 2-methyl-glycerol diacetate, are prepared by reacting a solution of alkenyl acylate in formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, isobutyric, or an aromatic carboxylic acid, in liquid phase, with an oxygen/inert gas mixture at between 80‹ and 250‹ C., and between 1 and 200 atmospheres absolute and in the absence of catalysts. Examples describe the preparation of 2-methylglycerol diacetate and 1 -methyl-glycerol diacetate and 1-methyl-glycerol diacetate and triacetate, and glycerol di- and tri-formate. The process may be batchwise or continuous with recycling and an apparatus comprising a reactor, condenser, and a distillation column is described for the continuous process.
