Methylene-bis-anilines are made by reacting at least one arylamine with formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst which comprises an arylsulphonic acid supported on an inert solid material. Specified arylamines are aniline, mtoluidine, o-ethylaniline, p-ethylaniline, cumidine, m-butoxyaniline, p-octyloxyaniline, maminophenol, o-chloraniline, 3 : 5 dichloraniline, o-bromaniline, 3-bromo-5-chloraniline, mnitraniline, o-nitraniline, p-nitraniline, metanilic acid, 5-chlorometanilic acid, N-methyl-im-anisidine, N:N dimethylaniline. Polyformaniline may be formed as by-product when the arylamine selected has 2 reactive sites. Examples describe the preparation of methylene bis-ochloraniline and 2 : 5 : 5<SP>1</SP>-trichloro-4 : 4<SP>1</SP> - diaminodiphenyl methane.
