A magnetically-biased, manually-operable, normally-open switch arranged as a hand knob for mounting on the gear lever of a motor vehicle, has a tubular stem 1 secured to the gear lever 3 and a permanent horseshoe magnet 5 clamped against a shoulder 4 of the stem 1. A contact disc 8 is insulated from, but carried on, the end of the stem 1 which is riveted over to secure the disc 8, a spacing sleeve 11 and the magnet 5. A hollow magnetic knob 6 has an annular end wall 7 normally retained by the magnet 5 so that a contact ring 9 is spaced from the disc 8. The disc 8 is connected to a conductor passing through the stem 1 and lever 3 and the ring 9 is connected to the stem itself through the knob 6 and a pair of flexible fingers 13. A plate rectifier 14 reduces back e.m.f. surge on contact opening. The knob may be tilted or moved axially to close the switch and be rotated to clean the contacts.
