The cutter may be provided with blades m shaped to suit the outline of the teeth and mounted in a head rotated on a shaft d. The shaft d drives through speed-reduction gear a loosely-mounted spur-wheel g<4>, which is provided with a surface g<7> and projection g<8> engaging with a roller g<9> fixed on the framework. The shaft is provided with a collar g<5> and is moved longitudinally with the spur-wheel by means of a roller h on a weighted lever h' pivoted at i. When the projection g<8> engages the roller g<9> the shaft is retracted and the lever h' raised. The end of the lever has a slot which then engages a pin on a disk k<2> mounted on the screw-shaft j<2>, so as to operate a pawl k<4> mounted on the disk to rotate a ratchet-wheel k<1> and screw j<2> for feeding the workslide j. The pivot-pin k<3> of the pawl may be adjusted so that the pawl may engage one of two ratchet wheels according to the pitch of teeth required. The screw may also be rotated by hand. When the file blank is finished, a projection o on the work slide engages projections o' on a lever n so as to bring the projection n' under a stop on the lever h' to suspend the operation of the cutter, which is held in its rearward position by a spring f. The lever n may also be moved by hand. The file blank x is mounted between screw-adjusted blocks j<4> in a laterally adjustable angle-plate j<11> on the slide, which moves on adjustable guides inclined to the face of the cutter so that only one side of the cutter acts on the blank. The centres of the teeth may be on the centie line of the file or otherwise as desired. The work-slide may move in a vertical plane, and the weighted lever may be replaced by a spring arm, means being also provided for taking-up wear.
