In an offset rotary printing machine a non- absorbent resiliently covered damping forme roller 1 is mounted in bearing plates 8 which are so mounted about eccentric pivot pins 10 that manual movement of a handle 31 to a first position causes the roller 1 to move away from the plate cylinder 2 whilst still retaining contact with a fixed bearing damping roller 3, whilst movement of the handle to a second position also moves the forme roller 1 away from the roller 3. Movement of the handle in the reverse position naturally re-engages the damping mechanism with the plate cylinder. The roller 1 is mounted between the bearing plates 8 in eccentric bearings 37 to allow contact of the roller 1 solely with the plate cylinder 2 for roller cleaning purposes.
