Connected to the driving-shaft 11 are two arms 13, through holes in the ends of which a pin 6 fits loosely. The head of this pin enters a recess 8 in the pulley 9 from which the load is suspended. At 5 the pin is gripped by the recessed ends of a circular band-brake 4 fitting inside the fixed cylinder 3. When the load is suspended, it tends to set the pin 6 across the holes in the arm 13, with the result that the ends 5 of the band 4 are forced apart and the brake applied. In a modification, one of the arms 13 is set slightly in advance of the other. In applying the invention to friction clutches, couplings, and the like, the fixed cylinder is made integral with the pulley which is driven by the pin 6 as above described.
