Dinitro- and diamido-p-hydroxybenzyl sulphonic acids.-p-Hydroxybenzyl sulphonic acid is converted into a dinitro derivative by acting upon it in sulphuric-acid solution with two molecular proportions of nitric acid, taking care at first to keep the temperature below zero C. The mixture is poured upon ice, treated with milk of lime, and concentrated. The calcium salt of the dinitro compound may be crystallized out, or the solution may be freed from calcium by means of sulphuric acid and then reduced by means of finely-divided iron and acetic acid. The diamido-p-hydroxybenzyl sulphonic acid is obtained as a grey powder upon evaporation, preferably with addition of sulphurous acid to prevent oxidation. Dyes, artificial.-Disazo dyes are produced by combining the tetrazo compound of the foregoing diamido-p-hydroxybenzyl sulphonic acid with two molecular proportions of an azo dye-stuff component, or with one molecular proportion of each of two different components. An example is given in which #-naphthol is used, as well as a table showing a variety of shades obtained upon unmordanted wool, before and after treatment with chromates or copper sulphate, by the dyes produced by use of #-naphthol, 2-naphthol-3 : 6- disulphonic acid, m-phenylenediamine, alpha-naphthylamine, 1 : 4-naphthol sulphonic acid, 2-naphthol-3 : 6-disulphonic acid, resorcin, and 1 : 8-amidonaphthol-4-sulphonic acid, either singly or in pairs.
