Lime &c. kilns.- Relates to gas-fired shaft kilns of the kind described in Specification No. 4478, A.D. 1906, [Abridgment Class Buildings &c.], for burning limestone, dolomite, &c., and comprises means for introducing the gas, for withdrawing the burnt material, and for providing access to various parts of the kiln so that repairs may be effected without stoppage. At its lower part, the shaft is divided into three chambers b, Fig. 3, by curved partitions c through each of which gas from a producer g passes to the opposite chamber, the gas supply being regulated by dampers e<2>, d<2>. From the annular passage f gas passes through uptakes k<1> and branch flues k<2>, Fig. 6, and escapes into the kiln through openings k. To provide access for cleaning the flues and regulating the gas supply, channels e<1>, d<1>, k<3>, k<6> extend to the outside of the kiln, and the annular passage f is interrupted between the gas-inlet flues by recesses formed in the exterior wall. Above the inlets k and flues k<2> recesses hare formed, so that, by opening the doors i, the lining of the kiln may be cooled, and blocks forming the lining may be removed and repaired. Doors l are arranged as shown for the supply of air and the control of the burning process, and removable plates k<5> are placed above the flues k<2>. The partitions c are constructed to form a cone in the centre of the shaft so as to deflect burnt material towards the main discharge openings p. The upper surfaces c<2> of the partitions are inclined towards outlets m which allow burnt material lodging on the partitions to be removed and also provide access to the interior of the shaft. Air for combustion enters the kiln beneath grates p<2>, and an additional supply passes through inlets r<1> and flues r, and is delivered through openings r'.
