Axle-boxes; axle-boxes, lubricating.-The body of the axle-box is of ordinary construction and has a key A<2>, which secures the brass A<1>, and a dust cap A<3>. Two oil rollers a<4>, supported antifrictionally on spindles a<5>, are carried by frames a. One end of each frame is carried by a hook a<6>, and the other end is attached to a spring a<7> which keeps the roller pressed against the axle. The piece a' joining the side members is circular except at its upper side, where a ridge b<1> passes longitudinally along it. It has also an annular ridge b<2> which works loosely in a corresponding recess b which follows the contour of the hook. This form of attachment permits the frame to move in any direction, and thus ensures that the rollers a<4> shall bear properly on the axle. A channel-shaped ridge E is formed at the bottom of the axle-box, into which an oil-guard E<1> is fixed. When the vehicle is raised bodily from the axle, the rollers swing into recesses formed in the bottom of the axle-box, and are prevented from being crushed by a lug D beneath the end flange B' of the axle. An oil flange E<2> is placed lower than the outside flange d<1> to permit the axle-box to tilt relatively to the axle. The supports for the roller frames may be modified, and the oiling-apparatus may be applied to axle-boxes already in use.
