A drum 3 is mounted upon each of the driving road wheels, and, upon a stud 5 fixed to the framework of the car, two semicircular arms 6, 7 are pivoted. preferably carrying friction blocks 19. The free ends of the arms are normally held in contact with the surfaces of a double cam 8 by a tension spring 2, but, when the cam is rotated upon its pivot 11 by a suitable lever, the ends of the arms are forced apart and the brake put into action through the contact of the blocks 19 with the drum. The actuating surfaces of the cam are set out partly as radii from the axis of the drum and the straight surfaces joined by suitable curves. Brakes con. structed in a similar manner may be applied to, and adapted to act simultaneously upon, two co-axial wheels, and in other suitable cases,
