Brakes. - C a s tmetal brake blocks have a steel or other malleable metal plate partially embedded in their backs, lugs for attaching the blocks to the brake heads being formed by punching and bending up parts of the steel plate, whereby openings are formed in the plate through which the cast metal can flow. The lug shown in Fig. 1 is formed by punching out two lips 17 from the plate 12 on the block 11, the lips being secured in a socket 21 in the head 20 by a key passing through openings 19. The lips can be sprung into the socket, and their top edges may be bent over so as to bear against the base of the socket and prevent the block from rattling. The lug is sometimes formed by bending up lateral straps 24<a>, Fig. 11, on the plate 12, which is shown perforated at 15 and 23 so that the cast metal can flow through it. In another form, Fig. 10, the plate 12 has a single strap 24 at one side, which is bent over and inserted in a notch 25 in the other side of the plate.
