Grates; feeding and stoking.-Relates to firegrates for furnaces, domestic fire-places, and the like of the underfeed type in which the fuel is fed into the bottom of the fire-grate to ensure complete covering of the fresh fuel with burning fuel. One form of grate, shown in Fig. 1 applied to a domestic fire-place, consists of lower grate bars d connected at the sides and back by walls e to an upper set of bars f, Fig. 2. The latter are inclined upwardly from the mouth of the receptacle formed by the grate d and side and back walls e, towards the sides and back of the fire-place. The fuel receptacle is enclosed at the front by a sliding " gate" h mounted within guides h<1>, to which are secured the top bar i and the bars g. In its normal position, the bottom of the " gate " h is a short distance from the grate d to allow for the insertion of a shovel, which may be of the form described in Specification No. 13,907, A.D. 1906. When stoking, the " gate " and burning fuel are first raised by the shovel, fresh fuel is then placed upon the bars d, and the shovel is afterwards withdrawn and the " gate lowered. Draught-excluders c regulate the supply of air to the undersides of the grate.
