Roller mills; roller-and-breast mills.-Relates to ice-crushing machines in which large blocks or slabs may be treated directly, which machines are also applicable for crushing soda or other crystals or the like. In the form shown, the machine comprises two sets of rollers or crushers a, a<1> and b, b<1> provided with projecting spikes or pegs a<2> and b<2> arranged spirally or in curved or other formation. The ice &c. is fed in through the hopper B, and is first broken up by the large upper rollers a, a', after which the crushing is completed by the small lower rollers b, b<1>. All the rollers are connected together by toothed gearing h, i, j, k, l, m, so as to turn in the direction shown by the arrows in Fig. 5. One of the lower rollers b is adjustable with respect to the other b<1>, for which purpose it is mounted in lever arms c centered on the shaft of the roller a<1> and actuated by a rack and pinion c<1>, e. In a modification, the machine has one large upper roller and two small lower rollers, the three rollers being geared together so as to turn in the proper direction, and one of the lower pair being mounted in a sliding bearing so as to be adjustable with respect to the other. In either case, the crushed material may be directed into one or the other of the shoots C, C<1> by a movable flap t. Instead of being provided with spikes, the rollers may be formed with spirally or otherwise arranged grooves and flutings.
