Semaphore signals; controlling and locking signals; interlocking.-The relay valves used in pneumatic and like railway signalling-apparatus, such as are described in Specification No. 183, A.D. 1900, are provided with means to prevent leakage of compressed air from the main inlet to the indication cylinder, or part to be operated, and so prevent a false indication or movement. The valves are operated by a diaphragm attached to the foot of the rod 22, and are provided with an additional exhaust port, or ports 25 or a port and a passage, arranged between the inlet and outlet passages 8, 13, to intercept the leakage. The piston valve 21 works in the exhaust chamber 4, and controls the movement of the valve 19 and the passage 26 in the valve 17 by the conical part 29. The valves 14, 16 control the admission of air from the inlet port and passage 8, 9 to the outlets 12, 13. In a modified construction of relay valve, the piston 21 is formed in one with the valve 19, and the webs 15 on the main inlet valve 14 are arranged so as to enter the exhaust passage 26 in the valve 17. In a further modification, the valves 14, 16 are poppet valves, and the additional exhaust port is situated between the valves 14, 16 when in their normal position.
