Brakes.-Railway-wagon brakes are adapted to be actuated from any corner of the wagon by handles h on cross-shafts w, y which are connected by a rod ml and operate the brakes through a lever m, pivoted at m<2> and having an adjustable connexion with an arm p which is rigid with the tumbler lever o. This connexion comprises a screw u, pivoted to the lever m and screwed into a socket v, which is connected to the arm p by a pin p<1> connected to the screw u by a chain. By removing the pin p<1>, the members u, v can be adjusted to vary the pressure of the blocks on the wheels. The screw is surrounded by a dust cover. The blocks a, b, c, d are applied to the wheels on one side of the vehicle. They are suspended by duplicate links d' from the cross-shafts w, y and are actuated from the tumbler o through rods q, r, s, t. An oscillating weight x is pivoted on an arm w<1> on the shaft w to assist in the operation of the brakes, the arm extending through a conical hole in the weight so that the latter falls over when the shaft has been turned to a certain extent.
