Improvements in Brakes for Cycles and other Vehicles.
Реферат: 20,691. Ford, W. Oct. 16. Brakes.-Figs. 3, 5, and 6 show a tyre brake for carriages. The brake shoe B is curved to correspond with the wheel, and has a central rib b<2> which fits in a groove in the carrier A. The shoe and carrier are connected by a pivot a<1>, and the sides a<3> of the carrier bear at b<4> on the flanges b<3> of the shoe. A proj ection a<2>, Fig. 6, on the carrier also bears on the centre of the shoe. A spring S, fitting in a recess in the shoe, keeps the parts in their normal position. Fig. 8 shows a modification, in which the carrier A is pivoted centrally to the shoe B and helical springs s<1> are interposed between the two parts. These arrangements allow the brake shoe to adapt itself so as to bear evenly on the tyre under all variations of load. The carrier A is connected to the usual brake-operating apparatus. Fig. 12 shows a rim brake for cycles. The blocks H are carried on levers E<1> pivoted to the fork crown &c. at e<2>. The brake is applied by forcing the levers apart by a wedge F carried by the usual brake rod &c. A spring s' normally keeps the brake out of action. A similar arrangement may be applied to the wheel of a carriage &c.
