In the form shown in Figs. 2 to 5, the chain-wheel is formed with a flange having recesses in which are mounted, so as to oscillate on their ends f, pawls d, Fig. 4, having teeth e on each side adapted to engage with rings of ratchet teeth k, n formed respectively on a ring l secured to the hub and on a ring m secured to the ring l so that the points of the teeth n are opposite to the recesses of the teeth k. By this arrangement the pawls d during coasting are rocked from side to side, but on forward pedalling, they engage with either the teeth k or n. In a modification, shown in Figs. 8 and 10, the teeth k, n are formed on rings s, t mounted on a sleeve and secured in their proper relative position by a ring v formed, as shown separately in Fig. 8, with recesses w to engage with lugs formed on the rings s, t and with internal lugs to engage in slots in the sleeve. In another modification, rotary pawls 2 of the form shown in Fig. 13 are mounted in recesses formed in the chain-wheel flange and en- gage with either of two sets of teeth 6, 6<1> formed on a sleeve 5, the teeth on one row being opposite the recesses in the other row. In another form, shown in Fig. 15, the chain-wheel is formed with rings of teeth 10, 11, and the pawls are mounted in a flanged disc 13, secured on the hub. Fig. 16 shows a form in which the pawls 14 slide in recesses in the chain-wheel flange, and in Fig. 17 the pawls are replaced by balls or rollers 15, the recesses in the chain-wheel having curved driving-surfaces 16 to grip the balls.
