Improvements in Free Wheel and Brake Mechanism for Bicycles.
Реферат: 14,234. Rudge-Whitworth (Limited) and Pugh, J. V. Aug. 8. Clutches ; brakes.-Relates to free-wheel and brake mechanism for bicycles in which a drum, enclosing a ring or series of rings capable of being expanded by a toggle arrangement into engagement with the drum, is fixed on the hub and provides for forward-driving or applying a brake by back-pedalling. In the clutch shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the drum c is fixed to the hub, and encloses the rings f, which have overlapping ends jointed to the toggle plates g. The sleeve g<2> of one plate g passes through the cam slot i in the loose chainwheel e, and in the normal or free-wheeling position of the chain-wheel the sleeve g<2> just engages with the notched or star disc k fixed on the back fork. In forward-driving the rings f are expanded by the toggle joint, (or there may be two or more such joints), and clutch the drum c, while in backpedalling the rings are also expanded, but are kept stationary by the engagement of the sleeve g<2> with the notched disc k. In a modified clutch, there is one ring in the drum of the hub, and the plates of the toggle are normally at an angle instead of being normally in line. A cam ring connected to the chain-wheel provides for the actuation of the toggle, and a closing-ring with four slots, a recess, and a pivoted pin passing through a cam slot in the chain-wheel, is also employed. The drum and free-wheel mechanism are arranged at the end of the hub opposite to the chain-wheel end in other modified forms of clutches. An additional sleeve carrying the chain-wheel is then provided within the hub. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 24 and 25, two pairs of -half-rings f, f<2> and two toggles g are employed.
