Traversing -cutter type for cutting rectilinearly.-A. traversing-cutter machine for cutting rubbered duck &c. on the bias includes improvements in means for moving the knife into or out of operative position according to its direction of travel in a guideway, and in means for clamping the fabric while being cut and disengaging it from the clamping-means after cutting. In a modification, the inclination of the guideway is' adjustable. Fig. 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 5 a longitudinal section of the machine. The fabric is fed from a roll 134 over a shaft 121, between feed-rolls 106, 108, over a plate 100 and rods 99, between feed-rolls 22, 23, and thence to the inclined guideway 29 for the cutting-mechanism. A roll 129 receives the fabric 131, which is wound with the duck. The feed-roll 108 is vertically adjustable to admit the fabric; and spring fingers 117 entering grooves in the rollers prevent the fabric from sticking. The feed-roll 23 can be raised to admit the fabric by means of a cord 26 and a lever 24. The fabric is supported between the feed-rolls 22, 23 and the guideway 29 by rods 27, 27<a>, carried by cross-bars 28. The rods 27 enter grooves 22<a> in the roll 22. In place of the rods 27, 27<a>, endless belts 139, Fig. 14, may be employed, passing round pulleys 140 and grooves in the roller 22. The knife is carried by a slide 31 reciprocated in the guideway 29 by a cable 44 passing round a wheel 45. This wheel is operated by means of gear-wheels 53,54 and a rack 56 connected by a link 58 with a disk 59 on a shaft 60 driven from the main shaft 6. The knife 34, Fig. 6, is adjustably secured to a block 33 slidable between guidemembers 32 on the slide 31. At the beginning of its travel, it is moved into or out of cutting- position, according to the direction of travel, by means of a member 39 pivoted at 40 upon the slide 31, and having a slot engaging a roller 36 on the knife-block 33. The fabric is clamped. while being cut, by a member 82, Fig. 8, operated from a rock-shaft 85 by means of fingers 84. The rock-shaft 85 is operated by means of an arm 88, a link 89, Fig. 4, a lever 90, a rod 92, and a cam 95 on the shaft 6; or the shaft 85 may be rocked by a hand-lever 97. The fabric is disengaged after cutting by means of a blade 68, Fig. 8, normally retracted by springs 71, and operated by fingers 74 on a rock-shaft 72 operated by an arm 75, a rod 77, and a cam 80, Fig. 5. When the cut has been made, the feedroll 22 is driven from the shaft 6 by means of a slotted disk 8, Fig. 4, a block 10 adjustable in the slot, a lever 12, a rack 14, a pinion 16, and a free-wheel clutch. The distance between successive cuts is regulated by the adjustment of the block 10. In a modification, Fig. 16, the inclination of the guideway 29 is adjustable. The guideway is mounted on a disk 142, to which is secured an axle 143 extending through a sleeve 144 forming part of a stationary disk 145. The disks 142, 145 are clamped together by means of a nut 147. Means may also be provided for securing the guideway to the side members of the machine frame. The wheel 45 is mounted to swing with the guideway, and is operated from the rack 56 by a train of gearing. The rock-shaft 85 is provided near its centre with an arm 156 connected by a ball-and-socket joint with a bar 158, and is operated by a cam 168 through a bar 164 and bell-crank lever 160.
