The upper carbon is carried by a rack C, which slides in a slotted central tube A, and engages a pinion on the shaft of a brake pulley D. This shaft carries two loose links N, supporting a brake lever K, the unequal ends of which are attached to the ends of a brake strap surrounding the pulley D. The brake lever K may rest on an adjustable stop M, in which case the strap frees the pulley D so that the upper carbon may fall. The lever K is lifted by a link P connecting the links N and a regulating-lever G, when a core attached to this is raised by a series solenoid B, a dash-pot H regulating the motion; the strap then grips the pulley D, and raises the upper carbon. The regulating-lever G is made as an open frame. In a modification, the links N, P are dispensed with, the brake lever K being fulcrumed on the regulating-lever G, and the brake - wheel D supported coaxially with this. In a further modification, the brake lever K is also dispensed with, the ends of the brake strap being attached directly to the regulating-lever G, at unequal d i s - tances from the axis of this lever, which is eccentric to the brake pulley.
