[Also in Group VIII] A surgical dressing or a sanitary towel comprises an absorbent pad 1 and a cover 2 to the marginal edges 2a, 2b of which heat and/or pressure sensitive adhesive is applied before folding around the pad. The pad may comprise layers and include a moisture-repellent backing. The adhesive coated margins overlap and are caused to adhere to one another when the cover is wrapped around the pad. Covers are made from a continuous length of woven or knitted sheet material which is coated with adhesive along the side edges A and along longitudinal strip-like areas AA, the width of the coating of the areas AA being twice that on the edges A. The spacing between the adhesive coated areas and edges is equal to the desired width of the covers. The sheet is cut longitudinally along lines LL, which divide each strip-like areas into two portions of equal width, and along transverse lines T, to produce covers of the required dimensions. The adhesive coating may be coloured and serves to-prevent fraying of the edges of the covers.
