Cracking nuts.-In a nut-cracking machine, the nuts are subjected to a squeezing action or blows and a wringing action by and between two parts or devices in line movable axially in relation to one another, one being rigidly held during the action on the nut and the other having a continuous revolving and an axial reciprocating movement. A rotary shaft 1 is connected to a reciprocating shaft 2 by a sleeve 3 fixed on the shaft 2 and slidable on the shaft 1. The reciprocating motion is obtained from two serrated elements 11, 9 of which 11 is fixed to the shaft 2, and 9 is slidable on the shaft but is prevented from rotating by lugs 10 engaging an abutment 8. A spring 12 bears against a bearing 6 and returns the shaft 2 when the serrated elements slip over one another. The nut is held in a roughened conical recess 32 at the end of the shaft 2 and an opposing recess 32 in a slide 16 which is moved outwards by a wedge 25 against the pressure of a spring 21. The wedge is operated by a pedal 30 through a link 31 and lever 27 pivoted at 28. When the nut is inserted in the recesses 32 and the slide 16 moved outward, the nut becomes subject to a series of blows and twists from the shaft 2 whereby the shell is removed from the kernel. The slide 16 may have a rotary motion as well as a sliding motion.
