Automatic instruments; music recorders. - The invention relates to a machine for punching paper, more particularly applicable for preparing and reproducing tunesheets for musical instruments. A beam 13, reaching across the apparatus, and carrying loosely a number of punches 16, which are, however, prevented from falling out by pins 16', is rapidly reciprocated vertically by eccentrics 10. The eccentrics are carried by a shaft 9, which is driven by an electric or other motor. Besides operating the beam, the eccentrics also actuate a pawl and ratchet mechanism 35, for feeding a paper or like strip from a roller 33 to a take-up roller 36. The strip, shown at 29, Fig. 3, passes between a punching-block 26 and a stripper 28. The punches are selected by slides 17 which are notched at 17', and are drawn out by a mechanical or electro-magnetic device connected with the keys of a piano or other like instrument. When a key is depressed, the corresponding slide is drawn out, so that its solid part encounters one of the punches, which is thus kept in position for making a hole, it may be for several oscillations of the beam 13. The machine can also be used for copying tune sheets already made. The tune-sheet is passed over a table 42 between rollers 39 and 40, and is fed by a pawl and ratchet device operated by the eccentrics 10. Fingers 44 drop through the openings in the tune sheet, and complete electric circuits which energize the magnets 22 used for operating the slides 17. The details of the device may be modified.
