Tapping.-The tap 18 of nut-tapping machines is mounted in a spindle 17 driven by spur-wheels 15, 16 from the main shaft provided with the fast and loose pulleys 8, 9. The main shaft also drives, through gearing 11, 12, 13, the shaft 14 carrying the various cams. The spindle 17 is advanced towards the work by the pivoted lever 19 and cord 22 with weight 21, and is returned and held away from the work for a time by the cam 25 acting on a roller 24 attached to a lever 19. The nuts are supplied by any suitable means to an arm 50, Fig. 6, pivoted at 53 on a slide 51 which is operated by a cam 55 and lever 54 to convey the blanks against a stop between fixed jaws 46 on a standard and in front of a supporting-block 43. Attached to the arm 50 is a clamp 52 with fork-shaped end to straddle the tap. The arm 50 and clamp 52 are rocked on the pivot 53 to hold the nut against the block 43 by a cam acting through the compound lever 68, 62 and connecting-rod 64, the rod 64 being capable of sliding in a slot in the lever 62 to allow the motion of the slide 51. The lever 68 swings on its pivot 67, compressing a spring 69 connected with the lever 62 if the nut is firmly held by the clamp 52 before the cam has finished operating that lever. The lever 62 and the parts connected therewith are returned by a spring 71. The end of the tap is made conical, and is supported in a centre formed in a rod 45 working a guide 44. The rod 45 is normally pressed towards the tap by a lever 72 and weighted cord 74, but is also operated by a cam 77 acting on the lever 72 so as to project through the block 43 to push out the tap &c. if broken. The rod 45 is then drawn back about flush with the face of the block 43 by the cam 78, and subsequently released so as to be only under the action of the weight. The tapped nuts are received on the shank of the tap and gradually force a frame 26 backwards till, when the tap is full of nuts, the frame 26 strikes a pivoted lever 28 which pushes a ring 41 on a cord 40 off a bracket or hook 37, thereby releasing the arm 30<a> on a rock shaft 31. The shaft 31 is oscillated by the cord 39 and weight 38 to throw over the belt fork 30 moving the driving-belt on to the loose pulley 9 to stop the machine. The loose nuts on the tap shank are placed in line to pass into the jaws 46 by the inclines 48 on the end of each jaw.
