Embossing ; feeding-apparatus for w e b s. - A machine for calendering, pressing, and dressing long strips of material comprises a drum 2, adapted to be heated by steam and wormdriven from the main shaft 3. The fabric, which is drawn over guide-rollers 15, 16 and through tension rollers 18, 19, is pressed against the drum 2 by feltcovered rollers 12, mounted on revoluble spring-pressed levers 13 carried by fixed arms 14. The rollers 12 are driven by means of an endless rope &c. passing round all of them at a surface velocity 1 per c e n t greater than that of the material. The steam-heated calendering-rollers 9 are oscillated over the face of the fabric by crankactuated levers 7. A resilient medium 9<a> of rubber &c. is inserted between the adjusting-screws and their bearing-surfaces in order to regulate the pressure. The fabric leaves the machine by means of the folder 20, 21. Before passing the rollers 9, the fabric is continuously exposed to the action of steam, emitted transversely to the axis of the drum through a steam - pipe (not shown) fixed outside the drum 2. For certain kinds of material, the machine may be constructed in a duplex form, in order to treat both sides in one operation. The surface of the main roller or of the calendering-rollers may be engraved with patterns in order to produce moirÚ &c. effects. The roller-groups 18, 19 are adjustable round respective centres 22, 23 to vary the tension.
