The usual auxiliary reservoir a and triple valve b of the Westinghouse automatic pressure system are used in conjunction with the ordinary combined vacuum reservoir c<2> and brake cylinder c<1>, the Westinghouse brake cylinder being dispensed with. The train-pipe f is connected to the triple valve by a pipe f<1> and to an automatic valve d, shown in detail in Fig. 3, by a pipe d<1>. The valve d is arranged for connecting either the train-pipe or the triple valve to a pipe d<3> leading to a valve e, shown in Fig. 4, which may replace the usual trip and non-return valve of the vacuum-brake cylinder. If this usual valve is employed it is so controlled by a spring as to allow any pressure beyond a certain amount in the brake cylinder to escape through the reservoir to atmosphere. The parts are shown in the positions they occupy when the train-pipe pressure exceeds atmospheric pressure, i.e. the positions for pressure working. Train-pipe air, acting on the disk d<7>, closes the valve d<8>, so shutting off the brake cylinder c<1> from the train-pipe and connecting it to the triple valve b through ports and passages e', e<4>, d<3>, d<9>, d<2>. When the triple valve is operated to apply the brakes, the air passing from it to the brake cylinder enters holes e<5> in a box valve e<9> and acts upon a disk e<6> to unseat a valve e<7>, so that the reservoir c' is connected to atmosphere through ports e', e<3>. During vacuum working, atmospheric pressure, acting through a port d<4>, raises the disk d<7>, so opening communication between the train-pipe and brake cylinder through the valve d<8> and closing the ports d<9>, whereby the triple valve and reservoir a are cut off from the brake cylinder. Atmospheric pressure also closes the valve e<7>, shutting off the vacuum reservoir c<2> from the atmosphere. The disk e<6>, being flexible, then acts as the non-return valve of the vacuum cylinder. The valve e<9> is fitted with a handle e<8> by means of which it can be raised from its seat, against the pressure of a spring e<10> and without affecting the valve e<7>, to connect the reservoir c<2> with the cylinder c<1> for releasing the brake. Rolling rubber packing-rings are preferably used for packing the pistons and stems of the valves.
