Separating dust and other solid impurities; valves. -In apparatus for the manufacture of water gas. means are provided for preventing the dust and " flyers" contained in the gas issuing from the generator from passing into carburetting or regenerative chambers &c. or other connected vessels. A reversible valve, for controlling the flow of gas from the top to the bottom of a generator, is arranged so that upon reversal, the cock controlling the steam supply is also reversed. The upper part of the generator a is connected by conduits c, f with a valve chamber h, which is also connected to the bottom of the generator by a pipe g and to the carburetter &c. b. In line with the conduit c is a passage e leading to a dust chamber d, which consists of a vertical cylinder with a bottom portion tapering to an opening closed by a cover. The momentum of the dust &c. particles in issuing from the generator carries them into the dust chamber, while the gas flows along the conduitf. The dust separator may be placed between the valve chamber and the carburetter &c., and in some cases a separator may be arranged on each side of the valve. The reversing-valve k, which is adapted to cover either of the passages leading from the top and bottom of the generator, is mounted on an arm p secured to a spindle q provided with an operating-lever. The spindle q carries a crank coupled by a link t to the plug of the steam-cock u, so that upon moving the valve k, the valve u is also actuated.
