Cigarette - making machines. - Straw-reels for tipping cigarettes are made by gumming straw husks a side by side upon a paper band b with the fibres d running transversely of the band, which is itself cut transversely of the fibres to form reels of a width e equal to or double the length of tip. The reel is fed at rightangles to the cigarette paper f, Fig. 7, and is cut into patches h, which are deposited on previously gummed portions of the paper strip. A reel may be prepared from a number of sheets on which the husks have already been gummed, vacant strips for connecting-up having been left. To prevent shrivelling of the paper, however, the whole sheet may be covered, the end husks being placed with the glossy side against the paper. Husks so placed can readily be stripped off when the sheets are to be joined together.
