[Also in Divisions B7 and E1] A movable machine for seizing or storing bulk materials comprises a jib 9 carried by a chassis with a longitudinal beam 1 rigidly supported towards one end on a transverse beam 2 and, towards the other end on a second crossbeam 3 by means of a hinge axis 6 parallel to the beam 1 and perpendicular to the crossbeam 3. The beam 2 is supported at its two ends by driving and guiding elements each comprising a self-propelled axle 4 articulated around a horizontal axis 4a encased in a vertical supporting pivot 5 abutting on and rotating in the beam 2. The orientation of each axle 4 is controlled either by a jack or a motor acting on the pivot 5. The beam 3 is similarly supported at its two ends. The jib 9 carries an endless belt conveyer 10 and a bucket wheel 11 and is pivotable about an axle 8 by jack 13 (or by a mast 14, cable winch 15 and cables 16 shown in broken lines). A feedback control device of a known type and comprising an n-position steering control, ensures for each of these positions either the parallel positioning of the axles 4 or their convergence on one of several predetermined points. As illustrated in Figs. 3a, 3b, 3c with a 9-position steering control the appliance may be manoeuvred (a) around three centres in proximity of the end of reach of the conveyer 10, one of these centres, 1, being located on the longitudinal axis of the beam 1 and the other two 1a, 1b situated to either side of the axis; (b) by translatory movement perpendicular to the beam 1 or left or right-handed rotatory movements of relatively short radius and (c) translatory movement in the direction of the beam 1 or rotation to the left or right. Using the centres 1a, 1b alternately the appliance may make angular sweeps combined with an advancing or retreating movement in seizing or storing bulk material or removing the overburden. The appliance may be combined with a further conveyer or appliance articulated to rotate about a vertical axis, Fig. 9 and Figs. 6, 8, 10, 11 (not shown). The beam 3 and axles 4 may be replaced by an axle (28), Figs. 7a, 7b (not shown), equipped with freely running wheels, in which case the centres la, 1b lie on the axis of the axle (28). The machine may be used for piling in heaps, removal of materials, earth-moving operations and exploitation of mines and quarries. The chassis may be tracked instead of wheeled.
