The invention is specially directed towards intermittent motion packaging machines where the packages are momentarily immobilized at a forming station for the time duration of the package sealing and cutting. The polymeric sheets or films (24) are sealed and cut after being exposed to a laser beam (20) in a controlled and optimized manner. The laser beam (20) is shaped with appropriate optical elements (56) to provide a desired intensity profile in the section of the films to be sealed or sealed and cut. With this method, a package (15) can be sealed and cut simultaneously in one exposure step. An optical clamp (30, 31) holds the films (40, 41) together while they are being sealed by the laser (20). The optical clamp (30, 31) can reflect back to the films, partially or totally, the laser beam intensity that has not been previously absorbed. The optical clamp (30, 31) further allows to monitor the sealing and cutting process while the process is being performed.

A system and method for using a laser (18) to weld a plastic substrate material (12) to an adjacent material (14), such as a synthetic carpet panel. The materials are placed in contact with oppositely directed major surfaces, so as to provide an interface therebetween. The material closest to the laser (18) is transparent to a wavelength of the laser beam, so that the impinging laser beam can be focused at a focal region on the interface. The other material adjacent to the interface is absorbent to the wavelength, so that heating of the other material by the laser beam causes a pattern of a plurality of melt zones to be formed, each melt zone consisting of portions of each of the materials. Subsequent cooling of the melt zones causes the adjacent materials to become welded together. Additives are combined with the materials to modify their transmission and absorption characteristics with respect to visible light and laser wavelengths.

An improved method of bonding a layer of material to a substrate is provided in which a laser beam is used to generate heat in a local area on the composite. The heat from the laser beam activates an adhesive to bond the layer to the substrate. Alternatively, the heat from the laser beam locally melts either or both of the substrate and the layer to create the bond. When the bond is created along a closed path, the heat from the laser may also cause the layer to puff away from the substrate. The invention can be used for a variety of purposes such as creating decorative features on greeting cards to give them a novel look and feel.

In its most generic form, the invention uses a bonding technique in combination with a printing method for modifying or covering at least one portion of a surface to either fully or partially prevent localised bonding. The structuring process may act upon the layers either before or after the bonding of the layers. The invention overcomes the limitations described in the application of affinity chromatography by providing a planar substrate with discrete optical detection flow cells that contain porous material and have connecting microchannels for fluid delivery and/or removal, and a method for making the same.

A method for scribing transparent materials uses ultrashort laser pulses to create multiple scribe features with a single pass of the laser beam across the material, with at least one of the scribe features being formed below the surface of the material. Slightly modifying the ultrashort pulse laser processing conditions produces sub-surface marks. When properly arranged, these marks are clearly visible with side-illumination and not clearly visible without side-illumination. In addition, a method for welding transparent materials uses ultrashort laser pulses to create a bond through localized heating. The ultrashort pulse duration causes nonlinear absorption of the laser radiation, and the high repetition rate of the laser causes pulse-to-pulse accumulation of heat within the materials.

A machine and method for making bags is described and includes a web traveling from an input section to a rotary drum, to an output section. The rotary drum includes at least one seal bar, having a first sealing zone, and an adjacent weakening zone. The weakening zone may be a heated perforator, includes a heating wire, or be disposed to create an auxiliary sealed area. The heating wire can have, connected thereto, a source of power that is at an adjustable voltage or magnitude, and/or pulsed, and/or a feedback loop. The heating wire may be an NiCr wire and make intermittent contact with the web and be disposed in an insert. The weakening zone may create a line of weakness that is uniform or varies in intensity, is a separating zone, or includes a heat film, a toothed blade, a row of pins, a source of air, or a source of vacuum. The sealing zones may include temperature zones, cartridge heaters, cooling air, or heated air, or a source of ultrasonic, microwave or radiative energy.

A laser welding method and system for joining portions of first and second workpieces of thermoplastic material that is partially permeable to a laser beam but absorbs radiation from the laser beam. A mask is placed on a first surface of the first workpiece, the first surface being opposite the surface engaging the second workpiece. The mask is impermeable to a laser beam and forms a slot for passing a laser beam to the portion of the first surface of the upper workpiece exposed by the slot, so that heating and melting of the material of the workpieces is limited to the width of the slot.
