A reagent-loaded pencil, method of preparing a reagent-loaded pencil, and a system that uses reagent-loaded pencils are disclosed. The reagent-loaded pencil or pencils include a matrix of at least a soluble carrier, a hardening substance, and a reagent. The pencils also include a sheath disposed around at least a portion of the matrix. The soluble carrier may include poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether. The hardening substance may leave a visible mark when abraded against a writing surface. One example of such a substance includes graphite. The sheath may be the outside of a wooden pencil or a mechanical pencil. A system that uses reagent-loaded pencils or compressed matrices may include a computer-controlled plotter that holds and plots with at least one of the reagent-loaded pencils or matrices.

Abstract of the Disclosure Apparatus for cutting an extrudate to finished length includes a hopper that receives rough-cut lengths of extrudate, and feeds them one at a time to holders on a movable carrier. Each holder captures a length of extrudate which is transported by movement of the carrier to a pair of heated blades spaced apart a distance equal to the desired finished length of the extrudate. The blades serve to cut a portion from each end of the extrudate in a holder, whereby the extrudate is trimmed to finished length, and, simultaneously to fuse the material of the extrudate at the end faces, thereby sealing such faces. Further movement of the carrier enables the holders to release the trimmed extrudate onto a conveyor.

A thermoplastic resin casing (B1) having a protruding shape is fabricated by hot forming with a laminated plate (1) made up of a thermoplastic resin plate (1) and a polarizing film (2) using a vacuum forming, an air-pressure forming, or a press forming technique. Alternatively, after forming a polarizing film in a mold having a prescribed shape, a thermoplastic resin is injected for molding, to produce a thermoplastic resin casing to which the polarizing film is firmly adhered. According to these fabrication methods, the polarizing film can be attached, without creases, over the entire surface of the casing.

The hardening substance may leave a visible mark when abraded against a writing surface. One example of such a substance includes graphite. The sheath may be the outside of a wooden pencil or a mechanical pencil. A system that uses reagent-loaded pencils or compressed matrices may include a computer-controlled plotter that holds and plots with at least one of the reagent-loaded pencils or matrices.
