Phosphorus- and sulphur-containing reaction products are prepared by reacting a phosphorus sulphide with a cyclic ketone having at least 12 carbon atoms. The ketone may be derived from the condensation of acetone to high molecular weight isophorone type fractions; the hydrogenated condensation products may also be used, and other ketones mentioned are dibutyl cyclohexanone, alkyl substituted carvomenthone, menthone, pulegone, carvone and camphor. The phosphorus sulphide may be phosphorus pentasulphide or heptasulphide. The molecular ratio of phosphorus sulphide to ketone may be from 1 : 2 to 1 : 1.2. The reaction product may be sulphurized, and before or after sulphurization may be treated with a metal compound, ammonia or an organic base to form a salt. Known higher dialkyl dimethyl ammonium clays can be used as thixotropic agents in reinforced thermoset resins containing a major proportion of an unsaturated polyester and a minor proportion of a styrene type monomer by employing a pregel process. In this process, the quaternary ammonium clay is pregelled in the styrene and the resulting pregel is then mixed with the unsaturated polyester to produce the final gel which is usually combined with glass fiber as a reinforcing agent for the production of thermoplastics. The novel clay gel compositions of the present invention have surprisingly advantageous properties compared to the presently used fumed silica gel compositions.

Disclosed is a method of reducing the rate of depletion of basicity (as determined by ASTM D2896) of a lubricating oil composition in use in an engine. The lubricating oil composition includes at least one overbased alkali or alkaline earth metal detergent. The method comprises adding to the lubricating oil composition one or more compounds of Formula (I): (see formula I) wherein: x is 1 to 50, preferably 1 to 40, more preferably 1 to 30; R1 and R2 are H, hydrocarbyl groups having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, or hydrocarbyl groups having 1 to 12 carbon atoms and at least one heteroatom; R is a hydrocarbyl group having 9 to 100, preferably 9 to 70, most preferably, 9 to 50, carbon atoms; and n is 0 to 10, or alkaline earth metal salts thereof. The compounds of formula (I) are preferably methylene-bridged alkyl phenols or ethoxylated methylene-bridged alkyl phenols.

A composition for an aqueous tacky lubricant, specifically targeted towards increasing lubricant retention to the moving components of chainsaws. More specifically, the composition includes a novel additive composition for environmentally-neutral lubricants. The ideal function of the composition would be to increase the adhesive qualities of an aqueous lubricant without compromising the coolant and lubricant roles of such a substance. To accomplish this, the composition includes an additive compound, that is made of a linear anionic polyamide and a cationic surfactant. The reaction between the linear anionic polyamide and the cationic surfactant creates a viscoelastic tackifier that helps the lubricant to cling to a moving chain thus preventing the lubricant from flinging off the chain when in motion. In other words, the additive compound is a tackifier agent, presented as novel both as an independent composition and in addition to extant lubricants. 1. A composition for a water-soluble lubricant with increased adhesive quality , comprising:a quantity of an anionic linear polyamide;a quantity of a cationic surfactant;a quantity of a water-soluble lubricant;the quantity of the anionic linear polyamide and the quantity of the cationic surfactant, being homogeneously mixed into a lubricant additive;the quantity of the water-soluble lubricant and the lubricant additive being homogeneously mixed into an aqueous tacky lubricant.2. The invention provides a powder coating composition comprising of thermoplastic polymers, ceramic particles, and cermet particles for lowering the friction coefficient, and improving wear and corrosion resistance of coated surfaces in high-temperature, high-pressure, and corrosive environments. A friction material member particularly useful in high load and temperature applications and a method for making the same are disclosed. The friction material member is made by preparing a mixture of sinterable metal particles, carbonaceous material, friction enhancers and curable polymeric resin; the mixture comprising at least about 50 percent by weight of metal particles and sufficient resin to coat and bond the metal particles, carbonaceous material and friction enhancers. The mixture is molded and the resin cured to form a piece in a solid preformed shape corresponding to the shape of the mold. Thereafter, the preformed piece is heated in a substantially oxygen free atmosphere for a time and at temperatures and pressures sufficient to fuse at least a portion of the metal particles into a sintered metal matrix. The preformed piece may be sintered to a metal backing plate during the heating step, or may be welded, brazed or soldered to the plate after heating. The resulting product may be classified as a hybrid friction material, i.e., being a cross between semi-metallic and sintered full metallic friction materials.

Condensation products made by reacting an α-hydroxyalkyl hydroxy-aromatic compound also having at least one non-fused hydrocarbyl substituent with at least one olefinic nitrile, carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid derivative are useful as additives for fuels and lubricants. The total number of carbon atoms in the non-fused hydrocarbyl substituents is at least about 7 while the αhydroxyalkyl group contains from 1 to about 36 carbons and the olefinic acid or nitrile reactant usually contains 2 to about 40 carbon atoms. Products made from hydroxymethyl alkyl-substituted phenols and α,β-olefinic acid derivatives such as maleic anhydride and particularly useful. Similarly useful post-treated products can be made from these condensation products by further reaction with alcohols, amines, metal salts or metals.

LOW ASH LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITIONS Abstract of the Disclosure Lubricant and functional fluids, and additive concentrates, are composed of a) at least one overbased zinc dialkyldithiophosphate characterized in that (i) each of the alkyl groups is a primary alkyl group containing from 6 to 10 carbonatoms, (ii) the overbased to neutral ratio of the dithiophosphate is 0.96 or above as determined by 31P nmr, (iii) the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows less than about 0.25 area percent phosphorus at about 80 ppm, (iv) the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows essentially no phosphate species at 5 to 15 ppm, and (v) the dithiophosphate exhibits a copper weight loss in ASTM Test Method D2619 of 0.70 maximum; b) at least one hindered phenolic antioxidant or at least one aromatic secondary amine antioxidant; and c) at least one overbased alkaline earth metal sulfurized alkyl phenate having a TBN as determined by ASTM Test Method D2896 of at least 200 or at least one alkaline earth metal allyl aromatic sulfonate. Preferred zinc dithiophosphates are further characterized in that the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows essentially no phosphorus species at 95 to 98 ppm. High thermal and oxidative ability is achieved.

A compound is a condensate of 1,2,3-trihydroxybenzene with an aldehyde. The condensate is a macrocyclic compound such as a cyclic tetramer. The aldehyde is preferably a long-chain aldehyde such as hexanal, dodecanal or tetradecanal. The condensate can be used as an anti-wear additive in hydrocarbon liquids such as liquid paraffin or as an anti-corrosion additive. The condensate can be prepared by reacting 1,2,3-trihydroxybenzene with an equimolar quantity of an aldehyde in the presence of an acid.
