Disclosed is a hand-held dispensing applicator comprising a source of fluid, a frangible applicator tip attached to the fluid source, and an absorbent member attached to the frangible applicator tip. When the frangible applicator tip is broken, fluid flows from the source to the absorbent member, whereby the fluid is applied and spread on a surface. Preferably, the frangible applicator tip comprises a support element permanently connected to the fluid source, a relatively rigid tongue element extending outwardly of the support element, and a frangible region there between. Preferably, the tongue element comprises ribs for reinforcing the tongue element to resist unintentional breaking of the frangible region. More preferably, the applicator tip comprises a semi-permeable or non-permeable cover disposed around the frangible region to control the speed and direction of the dispersion of the fluid in the absorbent member. Adaptive embodiments allow the generation of designs applicable to a particular medical purpose.

The method also includes deploying the thrombogenic matrix from the distal portion of the apparatus and into the puncture tract, the thrombogenic matrix being exposed to blood and compressively engaging the tissue surrounding the vessel to prevent leakage of blood. 1. A method of preventing leakage of blood from a vessel , the method comprising:inserting a portion of an apparatus into a puncture tract extending through tissue to a puncture in the vessel, the apparatus including a thrombogenic matrix disposed in a distal portion of the apparatus; anddeploying the thrombogenic matrix from the distal portion of the apparatus and into the puncture tract, the thrombogenic matrix being exposed to blood and compressively engaging the tissue surrounding the vessel along its length to prevent leakage of blood.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the thrombogenic matrix exposed to the blood forms a plug claim 1 , the plug having a length and a form factor that causes the plug to compressively engage tissue surrounding the vessel.3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising isolating a volume of the blood from the vessel within the apparatus and subsequently introducing the volume of the blood to the thrombogenic matrix.4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising isolating a volume of blood within the puncture tract and introducing the volume of the blood to the thrombogenic matrix.5. A method of closing a wound in a patient , the method comprising the steps of:a) treating a blood fluid such that at least a portion of the blood fluid will form a clot of blood subsequent to the treatment, the blood fluid containing sufficient blood components to enable a portion of the blood fluid to clot subsequent to the treatment once a clotting cascade is initiated, the blood components being selected from the group consisting of whole blood, natural components of whole blood, whether derived from whole blood, blood extracts, or products of ex-vivo cell cultures, and procoagulating agents which assist in or enhance the clotting or coagulation of the blood fluid, the step of treating the blood fluid including initiating the clotting cascade; andb) transporting the treated blood fluid to the wound in the patient such that the blood fluid can come into contact with the patient proximate the wound and the clotting cascade can come generally to a conclusion and a clot can form proximate the wound such that a clot is formed in the wound which prevents fluid from passing through the wound.2. A vascular closure device can include both a mechanical component and a biological component for sealing an arteriotomy. The mechanical component reduces the size or closes the arteriotomy. The biological component covers and fills any spaces or cracks present after the arteriotomy has been mechanically reduced in size. An exemplary embodiment includes a suture or clip to approximate the edges of the arteriotomy, and a smooth rounded plug is advanced along the suture towards the closed arteriotomy. An applicator device can be used to deliver the plug and, in particular, the device can include a guidewire that is offset from a central axis along a side of the applicator. In situ, the plug transforms to a flowable or gel state and fills and covers any cracks and spaces along the closed arteriotomy. 1. A surgical method for closing an open arteriotomy in a blood vessel , said method comprising:mechanically approximating a first lip of the arteriotomy to a second lip of the arteriotomy thereby forming a closed arteriotomy;advancing a sealant in an applicator toward the closed arteriotomy using a guidewire extending from a side of the applicator to aid in positioning the applicator and sealant adjacent the closed arteriotomy; andejecting the sealant from the applicator to cover the closed arteriotomy.2. This invention is directed to devices and methods for improving wound closures produced during endoscopic surgery. These methods are directed to delivering and applying a quantity of hemostatic agents in either powder, solid, liquid, or gel form onto an open wound produced e.g., by polyp removal, followed by the application of pressure. The method is implemented preferably using existing endoscopic equipment; however, modifications to existing endoscopic insertion tubes, application and tamping devices and endoscopic clips deployed from the distal end of the insertion tube during endoscopic surgery are also within the scope of this invention. 1. Devices and methods for improving wound closures produced during endoscopic surgery comprising:applying a quantity of resin ferrate hemostat in either powder or solid form onto an open wound produced e.g., by polyp removal, followed by the application of pressure as facilitated by novel accessory devices using existing endoscopic equipment.2. In an endoscopic assembly useful during endoscopic surgery , the improvement comprising:a hemostat formed of powder, solid, spray or gel delivery device extendable from a distal end of an elongated insertion tube of the endoscopic assembly during endoscopic surgery;the device structured for delivering a quantity of the hemostatic powder, solid, spray or gel onto a wound site and for applying a tamping pressure against the hemostatic powder or solid to facilitate hemostasis of the wound site.3.
