The invention relates to a grinding element, which comprises a substantially planar fastening frame (12), and where two or more grinding segments (10) made of grinding ceramic material are fastened to the outer surface of the frame by means of bonding agent (15). The dressing tool 1 is of conical shape with a large number of small diamonds 2 extending therefrom both axially and radially and has a tapered shank 1a received in a mandrel 6a which is rotatably mounted in a support 5 and driven by a flexible drive 9 from a motor 19. The support 5 has a mounting 5a for locating the assembly on slideways 12b on the work carriage 12 of the machine tool, the carriage having head and tail stocks 17, 18 for a workpiece and slideways 12a transverse to the slideways 126. The support 5 may have means for adjusting the tool angularly relative to the slideway. In operation, with the tool and grinding wheel rotating, the tool is traversed and fed relatively to the grinding wheel by hand wheels 14, 15 to dress the flat and cylindrical surfaces of the wheel. In an alternative embodiment, the flexible drive is connected to the mandrel by bevel gears.

A trueing device for grinding wheels, particularly for trueing concave or convex profiles with a rectilinear movement of the trueing tool. The trueing device has a carrier capable of limited rotary movement determined by adjustable stops and has a slide guide extending at right angles to its pivot axis. A slide is guided for movement on the slide guide and carries the trueing tool. A spring is provided which extends parallel to the slide guide and is located therein. Stop elements are secured to opposite ends of the spring and are engaged at each end with the abutment surfaces on the opposite ends of the slide. The spring normally maintains the abutment surfaces in an aligned condition in the mid position. A driving device is provided which includes a driving shaft which is coaxial with the axis of rotation of the carrier and operates the slide via members that convert its rotary action into rectilinear motion.

An improved method for dressing the periphery of a grinding wheel having a circular main surface which extends transversely to a circular shoulder. To dress the main surface of the grinding wheel, an axially extending surface on a first dressing wheel is moved into engagement with the main surface of the grinding wheel. To dress the shoulder surface, an axially extending surface on a second dressing wheel is moved into engagement with the shoulder surface of the grinding wheel. The two dressing wheels are mounted on a common carriage or slide which is moved relative to the grinding wheel by a three-position motor assembly. The three-position motor assembly and dressing wheel slide are both mounted on a base slide which is moved toward and away from the grinding wheel by another motor. The two dressing wheels are mounted for rotation about transversely extending axes and are positioned relative to each other in such a manner that when the first dressing wheel is in engagement with the main surface of the grinding wheel, the second dressing wheel is spaced from the shoulder surface of the grinding wheel. Similarly, when the second dressing wheel is in engagement with the shoulder surface of the grinding wheel, the first dressing wheel is spaced from the main surface of the grinding wheel.

First and second end surface truing sections are formed by protruding cylindrical first and second base bodies from opposite end surfaces of a disc-like base of an opposite end surface truing tool in the axial direction thereof and by providing on the external surface of the first base body and the internal surface of the second base body first and second abrasive grain layers in which numerous diamond abrasive grains are adhered with bond material. The rotational axis of the opposite end surface truing tool is inclined relative to the rotational axis of the grinding wheel within almost the same plane at a predetermined inclination angle. By moving the opposite end surface truing tool toward the rotational axis of the grinding wheel, the first and second abrasive grain layers respectively true the grinding surfaces at the opposite ends of the grinding wheel under almost the same condition to sharp grinding surfaces having moderate ruggedness, as they go ahead of the first and second base bodies to be backed up thereby. Consequently, it can be realized to true the grinding surfaces at the opposite ends of the grinding wheel under almost the same condition to the sharp grinding surfaces having the moderate ruggedness.

An apparatus for successively truing and dressing a grinding wheel made of cubic boron nitride (CBN) with a diamond-impregnated truing roll and a metal dressing roll. The truing and dressing rolls are rotatably mounted on a roll carriage which is slidably mounted on a grinding machine so as to feed the rolls toward the CBN wheel and thereafter traversely move the rolls along the wheel surface of the CBN wheel. After truing with the truing roll, a coolant fluid mixed with liberation abrasive grain is supplied toward a gap of a predetermined distance, smaller than the mean size of the abrasive grain, which is established between the CBN wheel and the dressing roll, so that the liberation abrasive grain acts to grind and remove bond material from the wheel surface in order to accomplish the dressing of the CBN wheel.

The present invention is a size dressing apparatus (10) particularly adapted for sizing rotary grind wheels. The apparatus includes a base block (12) of generally rectangular solid shape and formed to include a vertical transverse gap (14) or slot and a cylindrical axial bore (16) intersecting the gap (14). A large abrasive and support point (20) is stationarily positioned within the gap (14) along the bore (16) axis while a second, smaller abrasive point (22) is movably positioned opposite the first point (20) along the axis. A positioning assembly (24), including a micrometer position control (44) knob for precisely setting the axial position of the second abrasive point, is provided in the axial bore (16) opposite from the first abrasive point (20). The apparatus (10) is especially intended for dressing very narrow grinding wheels to precise tolerances.

WHEEL DRESSING APPARATUS AND METHOD ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for dressing adjacent faces on grinding wheel. A single point dressing nib and a rotary dressing wheel are mounted to a common slide oriented with its slide axis parallel to a first face on the grinding wheel. As the slide is actuated, the nib is drawn across the first face of the grinding wheel, dressing the entire face. After the single point nib traverses the first face of the grinding wheel, the rotary dressing wheel is activated and brought into engagement with a second face on the grinding wheel, adjacent to the first face. A cam is provided on the base which carries the slide, so that a tracing stylus will follow the shape of the cam and transmit the cam profile to the dressing nib as it traverses its path. In the manner, therefore, an extremely accurate profile may be dressed on a first face of the grinding wheel, and a second, potentially wear-causing face may be dressed into the grinding wheel by a dressing wheel yet the rotary dressing wheel will not introduce vibrational inaccuracies into the first face.

1354879 Tracing grinding wheels A A JONES & SHIPMAN Ltd and J HOULDSWORTH 14 Sept 1971 [15 Sept 1970] 43894/70 Heading B3D A device for adjusting a grinding wheel dressing tool unit 2 of a dressing apparatus in which the tool swivels about an axis, comprises means 57, Fig. 6, for supporting the unit, and an optical instrument 61 through which the cutting tip 1, or an image of the tip, can be viewed, the instrument having a sighting mark which represents the axis of tool rotation of the dressing apparatus, and the support being positioned relative to the instrument to simulate the position the tool unit occupies relative to the axis in the apparatus so that, viewed in the instrument, movement of the tool 1 relative to the sighting mark corresponds to movement of the tool relative to the axis of rotation in the dressing apparatus. In the dressing apparatus, the tool 1, such as a radiused diamond tip is mounted in a holder 2 axially adjustable by a screw (not shown) on a carrier 15 which, in turn, is adjustable transversely of the axis of the holder to a piston determined by abutment of an adjustable screw 30 or wedge 36 with a stop 32 on the arm 10 of a pantograph wheel dressing apparatus 13, the arm swivelling about a shank 11. To set the axial position of the holder 2 in the carrier and the adjustable screw 30 or wedge 36, the carrier can be removed from the arm 10 by release of a screw 23, and secured by a screw 23<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6, to a pedestal 57 adjacent a pedestal 62 supporting the optical instrument which has a sighting mark preferably in the form of concentric rings, the screw 30 or wedge 36 abutting a stop 32<SP>1</SP>.
