PROCEDURE FOR REPELLING BIRDS OF A SURFACE AND A COMPOSITION FOR THE EXECUTION OF THIS PROCEDURE
This invention concerns a procedure for repelling birds, a surface and a composition to the Durchffihrung of this procedure.
Woodpecker damage to wooden masts and cross beams represents troubles for the public supply industry for many years. The damage is not expensive only, but the holes in the masts a weakening the same cause and represent a danger, if the repair service hinaufldettern is. The extent of these damage is further common, than one generally assumes, and one estimates, Trade Union of German Employees the damage caused by chopping the woodpeckers is as by wind, thunderbolt expensive and damage caused ice storms together. The seriousness of the problem of woodpecker damage is for a long time appreciative and the literature contains numerous reports over preventive measures, on which the public supply companies spent completely considerable sums, in order to solve this problem. Under these are:
1. Fastening the perforated range from old masts to the points of new masts or the besides places and fastening of old masts at new masts. The underlying theory was that the birds would prefer the older wood to the new wood soaked with tar oil. The birds did not do that.
2. Fastening red Stoffähnchen and distant Melallstreifen to the masts. That held the birds briefly, obviously to it made sure, Trade Union of German Employees these things was harmless.
3. Cladding of the masts with metal nets or different foils, like plastic foils. That was to a large extent ineffective, since the woodpeckers tore simply large holes into the metal fabric, in order to arrive at the wood. The cladding of the masts with other material was unsuccessful for the same reason.
4. Application of chemical defense means. For a long time the desire insists to solve this problem by simply applying of a chemical defense means on the masts whereby the woodpeckers were arranged not to chop no more on the same. Of hundreds different chemicals that they would have been tried, but proved none was reported when really satisfyingly for different reasons, under which an insufficient defense strength or, if the Abwehrki'aft is sufficient, insufficient remaining is on the spot during a longer period.
Task of the invention is to be created it a procedure and a composition of the initially stated kind, which described the above, the state of the art of adhering disadvantages avoid.
This task is solved with the procedure according to invention thereby that on the surface a repelling working quantity of a connection of the formula C (O) CH: C (R) CH2 C (R) 2 CH2, I I in which R for methyl, Ethyloder the Propylgruppe stands, if necessary in a suitable formulation is applied.
The composition according to invention is characterized by that it a repelling working quantity of a connection of the formula C (O) CH: C01) CH2C (R) 2CH2, l I in which R for a methyl, a Ethyloder Propylgruppe stands, and a Kleboder responsible at the surface contains Überzugsmaterial as carrier for it.
The preferential chemical compound is the Isophoron, which corresponds technically to the 3,5,5-Trimethyl-2-cyclohexenon1. This special connection corresponds to the general formula, in which the remainders of R everything stand for groups of methyls. Their physical characteristics are good well-known and them are easily available on the market. Although it is judged as slightly toxic humans and the contact with skin and eyes to be avoided is, their use is not regarded as dangerous industrial venture, since it has a low steam pressure of approximately 26.6 Pa with 20°C.
The defense means according to invention can be applied as rather pure connection or in combination with a carrier or other inert materials. Can be used solvents, emulsions or carriers, which are essentially inert in relation to the connection. Examples of usable solvent carriers are gewünschtenfalls different Kohlenwasserstoffl aküonen, like the Napthas. Since this Ketonmaterial is only weakly water soluble, it using suitable Emnlgatoren or wetting agent can be converted to an aqueous emulsion and the emulsion can be applied on the ranges, from which the birds are to be held. The connection can also on suitable firm carrier, like different clay/tone, be absorbed and can as dust, with an adhesive for fastening the carrier, on the spot be preferably applied.
Although the connection has a low steam pressure and a considerable effect time, even if it is applied in such a way that it is exposed continuously to the atmosphere, can it be favourable to apply it in such a way that it is practically final of the atmosphere, in order to extend their effect time. An effective method to reach this is that a caps of the connection using well-known No. 391,055 a packaging procedures. The enstehenden caps, which contain discrete quantity of the connection enclosed in insoluble impermeable coverings, can be applied on the selected range or the surface in possibly a desired kind. For example the caps with an adhesive or a painting material can be mixed and be applied on the surface which can be protected. The connection is thus protected against the atmosphere, so that practically no evaporation can take place, and the caps can remain long time through on the spot. But an attack of a woodpecker or a such on this surface will bring at least some the caps to tearing up and the connection free will set, in order to fulfill their repelling function.
The connection can being used also in mixture with a suitable Überzugsmaterial like a Latexanslrich, which hardens, in order to hold the connection within the hardened layer and to essentially lock it from the atmosphere.
The applied quantity ketonischer connection should be sufficient, in order to repel birds, in particular woodpeckers, during a longer period. Since the connection has a very small evaporability, it becomes during long periods, during which it maintains its repelling effect, on the spot remains. The quantity which can be applied can vary within a wide range as a function of the kind of the creation, the desired Wirkangsdauer and other factors. Usually a quantity is desirable within the range of 152,6 g/m2 to 915.5 g/m2 surface. If the connection is in totally enclosed, the lower end of the range can be with for example 30.5 g/m2 surface. The upper end of the range is normally determined by economic criteria.
Example 1:
VOL animals one built and one accommodated two adults of gold tuft woodpeckers therein. (Untreated) a test mast became at the same time with the birds into the Voli& e brought in, so that knocking and marking the requirements for territorial out could take place. After an adjustment time of approximately 6 months a new electrical pole of the distribution class impregnated with tar oil was brought into the VOL animals, of which half of the upper section up to the half of the mast coated with Isophoron and which unbestrichen other half were. About 100 cm3 Isophoron were used on a surface by approximately 500 cm2. In the evening of first application there were one heavy rain and two days later further 50 em3 Isophoron on the test surface on was painted.
During the attempt time the woodpeckers with a food ration were fed, which consisted of alive flour worms (worm, larvae and beetles), putting hen pellets and dog fodder pellets. The putting hen pellets and the dog fodder pellets were given and additionally the flour worms were course-fed for an unlimited period daily (in each case to 100) to this unlimited ration.
On no side of the mast (treats or untreatedly) an activity was possibly determined until November. While the months November became until March the untreated side of the attempt mast violently worked on by the woodpeckers, whereby numerous holes remained in the mast. During the same period the treated side of the test mast remained practically intact and over the edge between treated and untreated section of the mast outside practically no damage was determined.
An orientation preference was examined through tricks of the mast around 90° and then around 180°. No orientation could be determined.
Example 2:
The effect from Isophoron to the defense of usual pilot chickens was observed that in a Futtertrog a fodder grain sprayed up to the moisture penetration with Isophoron was not submitted and in another trough überzogenens a Futterkom. The chickens ate gladly the not covered fodder grain, fral] from EN however the treated Futterkom not and no visible disease symptoms by the few samples at treated grain were caused. It was stated that the defense was obviously caused if the tongue came into contact with the treated grain.
