A plurality of track groups, having adjacent information recording tracks formed on a recording medium, are formed using a shorter track pitch (Tp1) than a track pitch corresponding to an optical cutoff specified by the wavelength of an irradiated laser light and a radiating optical system NA. In addition, a track group pitch (TpG) for adjacent track groups is formed so as to be longer than the track pitch corresponding to the optical cutoff. As a result of the track groups having a longer track group pitch than the optical cutoff, the track pitch within track groups can be narrowed and increased density of the track pitch direction overall can be achieved while maintaining the ability to obtain signals used by a servo from the cyclic structure of the track groups.
