The neuromodulation element includes a distal hypotube segment and a tubular jacket disposed around at least a portion of an outer surface of the distal hypotube segment. The jacket has reduced-diameter segments spaced apart along its longitudinal axis. The neuromodulation element further includes band electrodes respectively seated in the reduced-diameter segments and respectively forming closed loops extending circumferentially around the jacket.

A method for ablating tissue in a body of a patient within a treatment duration , the method comprising:advancing a medical device into the body of the patient adjacent to the tissue, the device comprising an elongate shaft having a distal region, three or more electrodes coupled to the distal region, a conductive member connected to each of the electrodes, and a controller connected to each of the conductive members;activating each of the electrodes a single electrode at a time during the treatment duration for selected time periods, by the controller supplying power through the conductive member connected to the single electrode during the selected time periods, while automatically maintaining the remaining electrodes during the selected time periods as unpowered so as to act as ground electrodes.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment duration corresponds to a total pre-determined time.3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment duration corresponds to a set temperature or impedance value of the tissue.4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected time periods for the electrodes are a set time that is pre-determined prior to the treatment duration or a time that is variable during the treatment duration.5. A method for removal of tissue from a patient utilizing an electrosurgical instrument. The electrosurgical instrument includes a handle portion having a pair of end effectors configured to remove tissue, connected to and supported by the handle portion for relative movement generally toward one another. One of the end effectors includes a conductive cutting portion that is configured to receive electrical energy from an electrical energy source. The other of the end effectors includes an opposing portion. The opposing portion is brought into a position generally opposing the conductive cutting portion during relative movement of the end effectors toward one another. When electrical energy is conducted through the conductive cutting portion, removal and cauterization of the tissue from the patient is facilitated.

Component count and cost may be further reduced using a pair of pulleys that are shared by four drive cables.
