A method of controlling proliferation of fish parasites comprising the administration of 1 to 50 mg/kg fish body weight/day of an inhibitor of folate synthesis and/or an inhibitor of folate activation to fish continuously for 1 to 2 weeks. Using a combination preparation composed of an inhibitor of folate synthesis and an inhibitor of folate activation is preferable, and a sulfonamide is preferable for the inhibitor of folate synthesis. A dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor, a folate antagonist, etc., can be used as the inhibitor of folate activation. The antiparasitic agent is able to exterminate fish parasites via oral administration. It is particularly effective against parasites belonging to the ciliate group among fish parasites.

The method involves immunizing with pools of overlapping fragments (synthetic peptides, e.g., 10-30 mers with 2-20 aa overlap) of the desired antigen in appropriate adjuvants. The T cell repertoire is primed to include not only the immunodominant epitope recognized when the intact molecule is used for immunization and induced by the chronic infection itself, but induce a much broader and balanced response to a number of the subdominant epitopes as well. The vaccination with peptide mix induces a T-cell response that includes response to subdominant epitopes is important for protection against chronic disease that on their own induces a response focused only on immunodominant epitopes.

To evaluate the antimicrobial properties of synthetic chicken NK-lysin peptides, we investigated cytolytic activity against apicomplexan parasites like Eimeria sporozoites, Neospora tachyzoites and Cryptosporidum sporozoites. The chicken NK-2 (cNK-2) lytic peptide which corresponds to amino acid residues of porcine NK-2 peptide significantly disrupted Eimeria and Cryptosporidum sporozoites and Neospora tachyzoites. In contrast, no bactericidal activity was observed on E. coli BMH71-18. The cNK-2 lytic peptide is novel antimicrobial agent which can be used to intervene and treat economically costly infections in the animal industry.

The object is to develop an antiprotozoal remedy having a novel mechanism of action. Provided is a compound represented by a chemical formula (1), a prodrug or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein within the formula (1), R 1 represents R 10 — of formula (4) or R 20 — of formula (5); R 2 represents CHO—, etc.; R 3 represents a hydrogen atom, CH 3 —C(═O)—, etc.; R 4 represents a hydrogen atom, CH 3 —C(═O)—, etc.; each of R 11 and R 12 independently represents each a hydrogen atom, a methyl group, etc.; R 13 represents —CH 2 —, —CH(—OH)— or —C(═O)—; each of R 21 and R 22 independently represents eaeh a hydrogen atom, a methyl group, etc.; R 23 represents —CH 2 —, —CH(—OH)— or —C(═0)—; and R 24 represents a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group, a methyl group, etc.
