A method and apparatus for mixing bone cement which produces bone cement essentially free of entrained air. The apparatus includes a cartridge having two telescoping cylinders. The outer cylinder receives a cap thereon which hermetically seals the cartridge. The cap includes an outlet pod in which a break-away agitator is installed and a pod for connection of a vacuum pump. In use, a desired vacuum pressure is drawn on the cartridge and the inner cylinder is allowed to be drawn into the outer cylinder while the vacuum is being drawn, whereupon the inner cylinder automatically stops moving relative to the outer cylinder when the desired vacuum pressure is reached. Mixing of the bone cement is then performed under the partial vacuum thereby created. The agitator paddles provide a scraping action against both inner cylinder walls of the telescoping cylinders thereby improving mixing. After mixing, the agitator is broken away, an appropriate nozzle is attached to the cartridge and the cartridge is inserted into a cement gun. The leading portion of the bone cement develops a convex profile when axially advanced through the cartridge and the piston plug includes a tapered protrusion which generally corresponds to the profile of the bone cement. The cap and paddles are also shaped correspondingly to the convex profile developed by the bone cement, resulting in substantially all of the bone cement being squeezed from the cartridge. An air escape passage is also provided to vent air contained within an annular gap between the agitator shaft and the cap upon initial expulsion of bone cement, resulting in the bone cement expelled from the cartridge being essentially free from entrained air.

The tubular rod (6b) has an open, first end that defines a mouth and an open, second end that is encircled by the disk, and is axially displaceable within the vessel for mixing the bone cement components (A, B). The apparatus comprises a means for holding and introducing component (A) into the mixing vessel (2) being joined to the mouth of the tubular rod prior to feeding component (A) into the vessel (2) through the tubular rod (6b). The powder and liquid components (B, A) are mixed in the vessel interior (2a) under a continuous vacuum whereafter the mixed bone cement is pushed out through the sealable spout (5) through a displacement of the vessel bottom (80).

The stirrer has a vane device dividing the interior of the duct into a plurality of spaces and openings formed in the vane device and through which the fluid (or fluids) moves (move) from one space to another. The mixer further includes a vibrator for vibrating the stirrer at a desired frequency. The vibrator may be of any one of various types vibrators such as an electromagnetically driven type vibrator consisting a coil and a permanent magnet, a motor drive type vibrator consisting of a motor-cam mechanism of a cam-follower mechanism and the like. The vibration of the duct or stirrer from the vibrator basically greatly increases the efficiency of the same stirring action as in the static type mixer and is also useful to eliminate any clogging on mixing powdery fluids. In addition, the vane may be in the form of a spiral screw-shaped vane which can exert a propelling force to the fluid (or fluids) in the desired direction during rotation of the stirrer.

This primary vibration is obtained by the passage of the liquid through a helix that carries the liquid, which in turn impacts and displaces a plurality of rods or elongated elastic bodies in order to obtain a mechanical vibration. This vibration is preferably controlled by the action of the electrical capacitance between the vibrating rods and the helix vanes that conduct the liquid, for which purpose the rods are connected to a pulsating electric energy source. This primary vibration is also controlled by the action of a permanent magnetic field produced by semi conducting media arrayed on a central tubular support of the helix, in such a way that the harmonics of the vibration that affect the incompressible liquid are transmitted to the biological contents of the liquid.

By using means external to the vessel to rotate and/or stabilize the pumping or mixing element levitating in the fluid, including possibly rotating the superconducting element itself or moving it relative to the vessel, the desired effective pumping or mixing action may be provided.
