Apparatus for mixing particulate materials dispersed in respective fluid streams following a period of non-mixing direct reacting contact between the streams comprises a reactor having a reaction zone, preferably of circular section, to which a first streams is admitted via means that impart high-velocity swirling motion to the stream thereby to form a swirling annulus or vortex. An inlet directs a second stream axially into said zone to flow axially within the annulus of the first stream to interact therewith. Downstream of the reaction zone there is an after section in which the vortex of the first stream breads to mix with the second stream. A method of mixing particulate materials, using such apparatus, is also disclosed. The method is suitable for mixing hot char and carbonaceous material to effect heat exchange for pyrolysis of the carbonaceous material.

A mixing apparatus comprises two or more tubs in which mixtures can be mixed to obtain averaging of a particular property, such as density. Two recirculation lines are used. One recirculates between an initial mixing tub and a mixing inlet, and the other recirculates from the additional, secondary averaging tub(s) and the mixing inlet. Computer control responds to densities of fluids recirculated through both of the recirculation lines. In a preferred embodiment, the computer is also responsive to pressure of one of the inlet substances. In response to these measured inputs and other data entered through a data entry terminal, the computer generates control signals for controlling the inputs of both of two inlet substances. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus and a corresponding method utilize displacement tanks both as averaging tubs and as conventional displacement tanks.

In a process for the preparation of an alkali metal or ammonium alkyl aryl sulphonate of low inorganic salt content, the sulphonic acid containing reaction mixture obtained by sulphonating e.g. with oleum and alkyl aryl compound is neutralized with a stoichiometric excess of an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide having a concentration of between 5 and 15% by weight, the neutralization mixture cooled to below 70 DEG C. and the alkali metal or ammonium sulphate is separated e.g. by gravity or mechanical means from the aqueous layer. The sulphonic acid-containing reaction mixture may be de-acidified before neutralization and the separated sulphonate-containing layer may be neutralized with a slip stream of the sulphonic acid layer obtained in the de-acidification step.

The two chambers are separated by at least one choke nozzle which has an entrance in the first chamber and an exit in the second chamber. Similarly constructed mixing nozzles (1) may be included in the apparatus. The apparatus is especially useful in processes requiring a gas to be entrained in a fluid so that the gas is in the form of very small bubbles that do not tend to coalesce and flash off such as in the dissolution of gold and other precious metals from ore in the removal of arsenic from an ore.

An apparatus for aftertreatment of exhaust gas including a housing having a longitudinal axis that extends between a first end and a second end of the housing; an exhaust inlet being positioned at a portion of the first end of the housing for entering exhaust gas flow into the interior of the housing; a first substrate being positioned within the interior of the housing downstream to the exhaust inlet, wherein the exhaust gas flow being configured to flow through the first substrate in direction of the longitudinal axis; mixer arrangement being positioned within the interior of the housing downstream to the first substrate and including: first flow guide arrangement configured to guide the exhaust gas flow to rotating and advancing gas flow in direction of a crosswise axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis; a reactant inlet for dispensing reactant to the rotating and advancing gas flow, the reactant configured to mix with the exhaust gas; and second flow guide arrangement configured to guide the rotating and advancing mixed gas flow in direction of the longitudinal axis as a mixed exhaust gas flow; and a second substrate being positioned within the interior of the housing downstream to the mixer arrangement, wherein the mixed exhaust gas flow being configured to flow through the second substrate in direction of the longitudinal axis.

The mixing device includes swirl tube, a mixing tube arranged in the swirl tube, and an exhaust gas supply tube leading into the swirl tube such that exhaust gas can enter the swirl tube tangentially from the exhaust gas supply tube through a cut-out opening in the lateral surface of the swirl tube and forms a flow rotating around the mixing tube. The exhaust gas completely enters the mixing tube and leaves the interior of the swirl tube completely through the mixing tube. A metering device can spray urea solution into the swirl tube such that the urea solution enters the mixing tube and is entrained by the rotating flow of the exhaust gas and is discharged from the swirl tube through the mixing tube together with the exhaust gas.

Liquid treatment apparatus comprises at least two chambers being first and second chambers through which a fluid can flow. The two chambers are separated by at least one choke nozzle which has an entrance in the first chamber and an exit in the second chamber. The choke nozzle comprises a converging section at its entrance, a throat section, a backward-facing step immediately after the throat section, and an exit section at its exit wherein the exit section diverges from the step. Similarly constructed mixing nozzles may be included in the apparatus. The apparatus is especially useful in processes requiring a gas to be entrained in a fluid so that the gas is in the form of very small bubbles that do not tend to coalesce and flash off such as in the dissolution of gold and other precious metals from ore and in the removal of arsenic from an ore.

The blender unit with integrated support frame may eliminate the need for any subsequent mechanical conveyance of the bulk material (e.g., via a separate mechanical conveying system or on-blender sand screws) from the containers to the mixer. As such, the integrated blender unit may be lighter weight, take up less space, and have a lower cost and complexity than existing blenders.

The aftertreatment device has a casing ( 10 ), which has an inlet opening ( 12 ) for the inflow of the exhaust gas, an outlet opening ( 14 ) for the outflow of the exhaust gas and a feed hole ( 16 ) for dispensing reactive substance to the casing. The reactive substance can be for example fuel, ammonium or urea/water solution. As an extension of the outlet opening there is a mixing tube ( 18 ) directed outwards from the casing for mixing the exhaust gas and the reactive substance. Inside the casing there is a feeding channel ( 20 ) for guiding the exhaust gas to the mixing tube. The feeding channel has an open first end extending to the outlet opening, the cross-sectional area of which first end is smaller than the cross-sectional area of the outlet opening. The wall ( 22 ) of the feeding channel has holes ( 24 ) for the inflow of the exhaust gas. Preferably, the wall of the feeding channel has at least along a part of its length a conical shape. The second end of the feeding channel can be connected to the end wall of the casing, whereby the exhaust gas can flow into the feeding channel only through the holes in the wall of the feeding channel. The exhaust gas can flow to the mixing tube through the feeding channel as well as through the annular slot around the first end of the feeding channel. The exhaust gas flowing through the feeding channel forms a center flow to the mixing tube and the exhaust gas flowing through the slot surrounding the feeding channel forms an edge flow surrounding and rotating around the center flow.
