There are many factors that distort the output of the heat sensor ( 110 ), particularly as the temperature rises and properties such as emissivity change, or as time goes by and tarnishing and dust affect the heat sensor output. Because the sleeve has low thermal mass and heat transfer only has to happen over short distances, it is relatively easy to calculate a change in actual temperature of the electrically conductive material ( 300 ) when subjected to a known pulse of drive current and this property can be used to calibrate the performance of the heat sensor ( 110 ) in situ in the chamber.

In a second embodiment, the control fluid is an electrorheological fluid where the electric field controls the viscosity of the ER fluid, thereby controlling fluid flow through the actuation aperture. In both embodiments the flow of the control fluid controls stretching of a flexible membrane into and out of the conduit, thereby controlling the flow of the main fluid by opening or closing the conduit.

The ES-CCF also provides external aeration like a bioreactor, thus increasing the versatility of applications. The method includes flowing a sample carrier fluid from a sample carrier channel and into an upstream portion of a microchannel such that the sample carrier fluid flows from the upstream portion and toward a downstream portion of the microchannel, and flowing a sheathing fluid from a sheathing fluid channel and into the upstream portion of the microchannel such that the sheathing fluid flows from the upstream portion and toward the downstream portion of the microchannel, and generally parallel to the sample carrier fluid. The method further includes detecting a concentration of a sample in the sample carrier fluid in the downstream portion of the microchannel, and adjusting a flow rate of at least one of the sample carrier fluid and the sheathing fluid based upon the detected concentration of the sample.

A spongy swab ( 16 ) is mounted against the distal face ( 15 ) of a piston ( 14 ) at the end of a push-rod ( 12 ). Once humected with a sample fluid, the swab and piston assembly is inserted into a tubular body ( 30 ) like the plunger of a syringe. As the swab is pushed and squeezed against the distal end ( 20 ) of the body up to a trippable stop, part of the fluid is excreted into a chromatographic immunoassay testing device ( 21 ) through a first aperture ( 19 ) in a distal section of the body. The remainder of the sample is kept in a sealed chamber ( 7 ) between the piston and the end wall of the tubular body until it is excreted through a second aperture ( 23 ) for a secondary test by pushing the piston beyond the trippable stop. That preserves the sample within the spongy swab that has been used to collect it; thus preventing the adsorption of the analytes on the surfaces of the sealed chamber, and to provide a convenient and rapid way to extract the remainder of the specimen in a syringe-like manner.
