The invention relates to a method and assembly for coating a moving web (1) of paper or paperboard by means of a coating mix jet (6) which is directed to the surface of the web without mechanical support. The invention is based on applying a desired amount of the coating mix to the web (1) via a narrow-gap slit orifice (5), and by virtue of measuring the coat weight on the web (1), adjusting the position of at least one lip (4) of the slit orifice (5) in order to achieve the desired weight and cross-machine profile of the applied coat.

The invention relates generally to an apparatus and method that enables a very accurate initial setup of the coating gap for slot die coater and subsequent control of the coating gap during coating operations such that web splices and web defects do not interrupt the coating process. An highly accurate initial set up is achieved via the use of a tapered or wedge-shaped adjustment member mounted perpendicular to the axis of travel of the coating head where the movement of this tapered or wedge-shaped adjustment member in a direction perpendicular to the axis of travel of the slot die housing adjusts the coating gap in increments on the order of ten microns. Substrate splices and defects are detected prior to reaching the coating position such that a feed-forward controller is able to momentarily retract the coating head both avoiding slot die damage and avoiding interruption of the coating process, yet the apparatus is able to return the coating head, with high precision, to its prior position once the splice or defect has passed.

An extrusion nozzle for coating a band of carrier material with a plastic mass, comprises a hollow body extending across the full width of the carrier material. Fittings are attached for feeding and recycling the plastic mass through the extruder body, the bottom from edge of which is designed to act as a doctor. The distance at which the doctor is positioned from the carrier determines the width of the outlet slot of the nozzle, which is located so that the hollow cavity of the extruder noxxle is enclosed by its side walls. Coatings of magnetic dispersions less than two millimicrons thick for recording tapes, can be produced without difficulty. The forces necessary to hold the extruder down can be reduced considerably, so that much greater variations in pressure in the flow can be tolerated.

An highly accurate initial set up is achieved via the use of a tapered or wedge-shaped adjustment member mounted perpendicular to the axis of travel of the coating head where the movement of this tapered or wedge-shaped adjustment member in a direction perpendicular to the axis of travel of the slot die housing adjusts the coating gap in increments on the order of ten microns. Substrate splices and defects are detected prior to reaching the coating position such that a feed-forward controller is able to momentarily retract the coating head both avoiding slot die damage and avoiding interruption of the coating process, yet the apparatus is able to return the coating head, with high precision, to its prior position once the splice or defect has passed.

A printing or paper industry assembly discharges a semi-liquid or paste medium through jet lips (8, 9) which are fixed to the supporting beam. The medium is discharged through jet lips that are supported by a hollow carbon fibre or glass fibre support beam (6) and forming part of the main assembly (7). The lower lip (9) bears a hinged top (13) that tilts back and forth with respect to the inlet upper lip (8). The tilting lip has an oval cross section (13a) with a pointed tip (13b). The lip rounded section pivots within a matching detent (9a) and forms part of the jet outlet. The tilt lip forms a gap in conjunction with a concave surface (8c) on the upper lip (8). The method includes steps of assembling a die coater comprising a first die block ( 12 ), a second die block ( 14 ), and a plurality of fasteners ( 40 ) holding the first die block and the second die block together, wherein each of the plurality of fasteners provides a compression force between the first die block and the second die block, and the first die block and the second die block are constructed to provide an internal manifold ( 16 ) and a coating slot ( 18 ), and extruding a coating material through the internal manifold and the coating slot. The coating slot can be adjusted to provide a more uniform coating slot along the length of the coating slot by adjusting the compression force of the fasteners, utilizing an offset bracket ( 80 ), adjusting the die bolt locations, adjusting the die overhang, providing a non-uniform shim ( 30 ), or a combination thereof. A die coater is additionally described.
